On the Block has pedestrianized 11th from Union to Denny a few weekends each summer since 2022 for a street market.
Rain City Fit has been closing a block of 11th for their annual lifting events each summer.
Block party makes a mess of the neighborhood by taking away public space one weekend each summer.
2017 People Streets
Due to the success of previous pilots, in Summer of 2017, ten pedestrianization events were held. The events closed down half a block of Pike and an entire block of 11th. They became a regular feature of the Pike/Pine area.
2016 Pike People Street
In October and December of 2016, SDOT continued with three pilots with different layouts at different times of the week. During this pilot they focused on Pike between 10th and 11th creating a half block plaza while still allowing access to parking lots.
SDOT’s report (Pike People Street) shows that these layouts and times were even more popular with residents and businesses surpassing 70% support by residents and 48% by businesses.
2015 EcoDistrict Pilot
In August of 2015 SDOT piloted pedestrianization of Pike: What it looked like when E Pike was pedestrian only. They piloted these temporarily on three Saturday nights.
SDOT’s report (Pike St. Pedestrian Pilots Data + Recommendation Report) shows that pedestrianization was widely popular with residents and roughly 40-44% of business/property owners were in support. The most common negative feedback was that it was only done at bar times.
